It all started when…

It’s actually hard to say that on this day my life was changed and I knew I wanted to design interiors. It was a slow progression from hobby to job back to hobby and now the creative calling I’m making a career.

I started working in visual merchandising in retail clothing stores. If you have ever worked in retail then you know pretty and organized lasts about 10 minutes and your mostly following a design plan someone sent from a corporate office. However it did get me thinking about those corporate offices, and all the other careers that might be out there. I found myself working at a prop and furniture rental company and was introduced to a whole new level of interesting and creative careers. From photographers, to stagers, to event planners, creating a story, theme or environment that would capture peoples attention. Which was where I got to learn the most about creating inviting spaces that make you want to stay longer, or stare a little longer before turn the page of a magazine.

Interior design was pushed to a hobby when a corporate role took center stage for a while. However the hobby stage of turning a tiny NYC apartment into a comfy oasis, or Brooklyn brownstones into surprising calm and homie spaces was what launched Jen Blair Designs. These design challenged spaces made me think outside the box and get creative with storage, space planning, and furniture that wouldn’t overwhelm a smaller room. My design career hasn’t been typical or orthodox but it has lead me to understand how to create something people will love to live in whether its for a few hours or a few years.
